D igital Media Studio (NMAC 3145) explores the intersection between digital media and artistic production. It is designed as an introduction to the theory and praxis of new media. Current critical positions and production basics will be examined in weekly readings, blog entries, and classroom discussions. This section of NMAC 3145 also includes a production component: not only will we address professional cultural texts, but we will participate in the digital amateur culture by using digital tools in the creation of our own cultural artifacts.
Students should be comfortable with computers and be willing to experiment with new techniques and technologies; having a personal computer and access to other peripherals (digital camera, DV camera, DVD burner, etc.) will be a benefit, though any necessary equipment will likely be supplied by the college and department. Students should also enter this class with a background in critical perspectives, scholarly research, and literary criticism.
