An Introduction to Convergence Culture
“Computers interact—humans participate.”
—Henry Jenkins
Technology and the Creative Artist explores the intersection between digital media and artistic production, concentrating on narrative and play. The current theoretical and critical concerns regarding “digital storytelling” will be examined in weekly readings, blog entries, and classroom discussions. This section of HUMN 3145 also includes a production component: not only will we address others’ works, but we will be creating our own digital stories in a series of projects that range from introductory to intermediate.
Students should be comfortable with computers and be willing to experiment with new techniques and technologies; having a personal computer and access to other peripherals (digital camera, DV camera, DVD burner, etc.) will be a benefit, though any necessary equipment will be supplied by the division. Students should also enter this class with a background in critical perspectives, scholarly research, and literary criticism.
